WHO WAS KOKOPELLI?

Known as a fertility god, prankster, healer and story teller, Kokopelli has been a source of wonder for centuries. The Legend of Kokopelli, dates back over 3,000 years, when the first petroglyphs of him were carved. Although his true origins are unknown, this traveling, flute-playing Casanova is a sacred figure to many. Carvings of this hunch-backed flute-playing figure have been found painted and carved into rock walls and boulders throughout the Southwestern states.

There are many myths of this proud Toltec, (pre-Aztec) who traveled from central Mexico, or as some believe, from the state of Nayarit. One such story is that he traveled from village to village bringing the summer rain for a successful harvest. It is also said that the hunch on his back depicted the sacks of seeds and songs he carried. Legend also has it that song of his flute symbolized everything good and pure about music. Kokopelli’s flute is said to have been heard in the spring breeze, bringing warmth and the summer rain. It is also said that he was the source of human conception, and the fulfillment of good dreams.

Legend has it, everyone in the village would sing and dance throughout the night when they heard Kokopelli play his flute. The next morning, the crops would be growing and every maiden in the village would be with child.

Whatever the true meaning of Kokopelli is, he has been a source of music making and dancing, and spreading joy to those around him. The spirit of Kokopelli lives in PUERTO VALLARTA’s Hotel Zone!

¿QUIÉN FUE KOKOPELLI?

Conocido como un Dios de la fertilidad, bromista, curandero y narrador de la historia, Kokopelli ha sido una fuente de maravilla durante siglos. La leyenda de Kokopelli, remonta a más de 3.000 años, cuando los primeros petroglifos de él fueron tallados. Aunque sus verdaderos orígenes son desconocidos, este viaje, tocando flauta Casanova es una figura sagrada para muchos. Tallas de esta figura de flauta jugando con respaldo de corazonada han encontrado pintados y tallados en las paredes de piedra y cantos rodados a lo largo de los Estados del sudoeste.

Cuenta la leyenda, todos en la aldea que cantan y bailan durante toda la noche cuando oyeron Kokopelli tocar su flauta. A la mañana siguiente, los cultivos se iba creciendo y cada maiden en la aldea sería con niño.
